IntCDC researchers, the IntCDC Industry Commission and interested Industry Partners met for an interdisciplinary exchange and knowledge transfer at the Large-Scale Construction Robotics Laboratory (LCRL) in Waiblingen on 7 November 2024.
Access to the research infrastructure is generally reserved for the scientists of the now 48 Research Projects and 53 Associated Projects. Together, they work with different robots and materials at several platforms in the large-scale laboratory on cyber-physical off-site and on-site manufacturing. Each platform combines the expertise of several research projects. The LCRL is therefore an important location for internal exchange within the Cluster, where the individual scientific results are merged into the joint, computer-based and robot-assisted development of demonstrators and processes. Industry partners were invited to the annual Industry Consortium meeting to ensure the rapid transfer of knowledge from academic research to industrial implementation, said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Knippers, Deputy Spokesperson of the Cluster, who welcomed the guests.
The informative and compelling tour by the IntCDC researchers included the following stations: adaptive, flexible and mobile robot platforms for different timber construction systems; a modular station for the prefabrication of coreless filament winding; a modified spider crane for on-site assembly of wooden cassettes; and an experimental setup for the AI-supported application of small robots in interior spaces or for building in existing structures. The final station was located outdoors, where a tower crane that is being automated to pick up, transport and install building components. A newly developed end effector is attached to the hook of the tower crane, allowing components to be pre-orientated for installation and automatically attached to or detached from the tower crane.
Jan Knippers and the IntCDC researches presented the status quo in the research areas of Graded Concrete Structures, Wood Building Systems, Fibre-Composite Structures and Biocomposites. They also gave an outlook on which of these systems will be integrated into the new IntCDC Building in Vaihingen, which will be the new home of the Cluster in the future. Industry partners with whom the IntCDC building is being realised were also present. The exchange proved to be both informative and valuable.
