More than 170 researchers met in person for the first time since AdvanceAEC was founded in 2019 at the first ever Autumn School of the research network AdvanceAEC, which took place from 10-12 October.

The two-day event was hosted by the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC at the University of Stuttgart as part of the Stuttgart Week of Advancing Architecture, Engineering and Construction (SWAA).

Organised by the AdvanceAEC network partners and led by members of the respective research associations, the nine workshops and five sessions aimed to bring together researchers with different disciplinary backgrounds from the partner institutions. This provided insights into research areas outside their own field of expertise and a platform for networking and exchanging ideas.

On 11 October, young scientists had the opportunity to explore (collaboratively and interdisciplinary) theoretical concepts, test practical skills and familiarise themselves with manufacturing processes, programming languages or computer programs, during the nine parallel (concurrent) full-day workshops. To this end, the workshops were thematically subdivided and originated from social sciences, computer science and computation, robotics and manufacturing, the interface between architecture and informatics, concrete design, carbon concrete structures, adaptive skins and structures, and machine learning.

On the second day, networking opportunities were deepened in five concurrent sessions on equal opportunities, start-up supporting measures, funding opportunities of the EIC, a poster session, and a workshop on career development specifically designed for postdocs and senior research associates. During the second half of the day, public presentation of all workshops provided insight into the results for all participants. The rich programme was rounded off with a guided tour of the Large Robotics Construction Laboratory (LCRL) in Waiblingen, followed by a get-together, which served as the opening event for the IntCDC Conference the next day.

The 2022 Autumn School laid the foundation for an annual recurring format, to be hosted by one of the partner institutions in the AdvanceAEC research network.

The International Research Network for Advancing Architecture, Engineering and Construction AdvanceAEC  brings together researchers who aim to advance architecture, engineering and construction through digital technologies and an interdisciplinary approach.

If you are not yet part of this network, which offers exciting online events amongst various other activities, please feel free to join us on advanceaec.net.
