Open Position – Research Associate at IntCDC
The Cluster of Excellence IntCDC at the University of Stuttgart is accepting applications.

The Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC)” aims to harness the full potential of digital technologies to rethink design and construction based on integration and interdisciplinarity, with the goal of enabling game-changing innovation in the building sector for sustainable, inclusive and high-quality architecture. 

We are looking for a PhD candidate with Digital Design and Fabrication background to join us at the Cluster of Excellence Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC). Within a transdisciplinary team, you will be researching on the project COLife: More-Than-Human Perspective to Co-Design (RP 29-1). The aim of this project is to develop, test and evaluate the co-design methodologies aimed at social and environmental change for the new envisioned Post-Anthropocene era where humans and other species live together in synergy. This will be developed for urban environments through architectural building adaptations.

Full time, E 13 TV-L, starting as soon as possible, for 3.5 years. Opportunities for part-time employment are available.

Job description, tasks:

  • Research by Design on COLife Project: The researcher will work individually through ‘research by design’ addressing these specific research questions:

    • How could social, cultural, technological and environmental systems be integrated through DIY ecosystems' manufacturing for all? This means developing a bio-integrated design that goes far beyond the former models of biomimetics.
    • What could be bio-digital intelligent products for the 21st century that support biodiversity and connectivity in urban landscapes in Europe and wider developed, prototyped and tested with a special focus on screens, envelopes, walls and semi-interior spaces?
    • How could parametric codes and recipes be developed for easily customised DIY digital manufacturing?
    • What could be an approach to sustainable industries through systemic design that integrates social, cultural, technological and environmental systems?
    • What could be a Post-Anthropocene architecture that is non-anthropocentric and multi-centred, therefore supporting social and environmental justice?

  • Cooperation within the COLife project with other team members.
  • Publishing on the COLife Project: The researcher will be in a team addressing the above questions in publications. This includes journal articles and conference papers.
  • Teaching: Teaching with her Junior Research Group Leader.

We expect:

  • Interest in Systemic Design and CoDesign
  • Digital Design skills
  • Knowledge of Grasshopper for Rhino and Python
  • Knowledge of Digital Fabrication
  • Graphic design skills with knowledge of Adobe
  • Video editing skills
  • Brief knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Willingness to learn the basics of the German language
