We are happy to announce that Research Project Area A.2 is organising a two-part workshop on optimisation methods in civil engineering.
Abstract
The efficient allocation of resources is one of the key aspects of the engineering profession. For structural problems this might translate into minimising the material usage subject to given manufacturing or acoustic constraints. Although optimisation problems in different fields might be completely different, the general methods to solve them are shared across different disciplines. This series of presentations serves as an introduction to the concept of optimisation in engineering and its practical applications. The first part, “Introduction to Simulation and Optimisation in Civil Engineering”, will focus in exploring the key elements of an optimisation problem and will present examples that can be solved with a dedicated software solution. The second part, “Black-Box Optimisation for Architects and Engineers”, introduces the concept of “black-box optimisation” and considers a practical part where the attendees will learn how to solve various problems with this approach.
Part I will take place on 14 February 2022, 1:00 – 5:00 pm
Presentation by Jan Grasmannsdorf (Altair)
Title: Introduction to Simulation and Optimisation in Civil Engineering
Format: Hybrid
Part II will take place on 17 February 2022, 1:00 – 5:00 pm
Presentation by Prof. Thomas Wortmann
Titel: Black-Box Optimisation for Architects and Engineers
Format: in presence
Participation in Part II is only possible if Part I has also been attended.
Attendance at the in-person session is limited to 15-20 people (online attendance at Part I on 14 February may be possible for more people). Members of RPA A.2 who register will be guaranteed access, the remaining places will be drawn at random from the registrations received.
The exact location and the Webex link for the event on 14 February will be announced after registration.
Please register via email to Karolin Tampe-Mai and indicate whether you would like to attend only on 14 February or both days.
