INTELLIGENT AND USER-ORIENTED PLANNING PROCESSES FOR CLIMATE NEUTRALITY IN BUILDINGS AND NEIGHBOURHOODS – THE EXAMPLE OF THE VAIHINGEN CAMPUS

The ‘Real World Laboratory’ project CampUS hoch i analyses and demonstrates options for implementing climate neutrality in buildings using new and existing buildings on the campus of the University of Stuttgart in Vaihingen. CampUS hoch i works with different building types, intelligent technologies and district integration. It works together in a co-creative way with the people who use, plan, manage and operate buildings. Through real-world experiments and participatory formats (workshops, hackathons, pitch decks), different aspects of climate neutrality are addressed, such as sustainable heating and cooling, intelligent lighting, sustainable building materials and infrastructures.

Such a holistic and transdisciplinary approach provides a blueprint for achieving climate neutrality in the building sector. Partners from business and public institutions will be involved to facilitate the transfer to other buildings and campuses, and to promote a systematic implementation, also at the University of Stuttgart.

The approaches and results of the project are intensively shared with other institutions in order to increase the overall sustainability of the university campus. In this way, the Vaihingen campus will become an attractive magnet for sustainability issues. With the help of illustrative communication elements (“climate barometer”, “construction hut”), multiplier effects will be achieved for a broader public and for subject-specific education is accomplished.
