Fungal Co-Agency – Moldless Fabrication of Three-Dimensional Pure Mycelium Materials
Eliza Biala
The project aims at functionalizing fungi as the new manufacturing platform for the moldless three-dimensional fabrication of pure mycelium materials. The coagency between the fungi and the designer will intertwine to establish the frontiers of the new aesthetics, functionalities and limits of biofabrication in material design. Grown-to-use methodology should contribute to understanding the cocreation with the living organism and creating speculative futures promoting further design in the field. The main risk of the envisioned fabrication concept lies in the unpredictability of the mycelial growth which may not be overcome by the means of the low-threshold setup and predominantly macroscale investigation.
