IntCDC Conference 2022:
Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Future-Proof Architecture
October 13, 2022
Hosted by the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC.
The upcoming conference of the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC presents cutting-edge research on rethinking design and construction towards a truly future-proof built environment based on an interdisciplinary approach including architecture, civil engineering, manufacturing and system engineering, computer science and robotics, as well as social sciences and the humanities.
We will discuss current challenges and novel research approaches focusing on computational co-design, digital fabrication and cyber-physical construction, with an emphasis on sustainability and responsibility in advancing architecture, engineering and construction.
Join us on Thursday, October 13, 2022, for multifaceted insights and lively discussions.
We also warmly invite you to the IntCDC Conference Opening Reception and Get-Together on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, starting at 6:00 p.m., at the IntCDC Laboratory for Large-Scale Construction Robotics (LCRL), Waiblingen.
We look forward to welcoming you at the Social Event and Sneak Peek of IntCDC’s Prefabrication Lab and Cyber-Physical Building Site (October 12) as well as to our IntCDC Confernce 2022 (October 13)!
About the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC
The University of Stuttgart established its new Cluster of Excellence on "Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture" in 2019. With an initial funding period of seven years, a Cluster of Excellence is the most significant and substantial grant awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). For the very first time, a Cluster of Excellence has been awarded to the field of architecture. It will contribute to establish an internationally visible research center.
The Cluster aims to harness the full potential of digital technologies to rethink design and construction based on integration and interdisciplinarity, with the goal to enable game-changing innovation in the building sector. The cluster’s 22 principal investigators represent the breadth of scientific excellence across seven faculties of the University of Stuttgart and the Max Plank Institute for Intelligent Systems.

The SOM Foundation is organizing the second International Research and Design Forum in partnership with the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture” at the University of Stuttgart. At the full-day event thought leaders in academics and industry will deliver presentations on their groundbreaking ideas and research centered around materiality. The second edition of the forum will include leaders whose body of work, creativity, and expertise inspire the future of design of the built world.
About SOM Foundation
Founded in 1979, the SOM Foundation’s goal is to advance the design profession’s ability to address the key topics of our time by bringing together and supporting groups and individuals, each with the highest possible design aspirations. The Foundation’s award programming was established in 1981 and currently offers five annual awards across the United States, Europe, and China. The awards support students and faculty of architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, urban design
The Conference „Adaptive Skins and Structures for the Built Environment of Tomorrow“ provides insights into the works of the Collaborative Research Centre 1244 with a focus on the world's first adaptive high-rise building!
The challenge is to create emission-free buildings for more people in the future with significantly less material. Beyond this, insights from research on adaptivity reveal new perspectives - for a sustainable transformation of the AEC field.
About CRC 1244
Since January 2017, fourteen institutes at the University of Stuttgart have been working in close interdisciplinary collaboration on the question of how, in the light of the growing world population and depleting resources, more living space can be created with less material in the future.
The objective of CRC 1244 is therefore to find answers to the pressing ecological and social questions of our time for the construction industry. The aim is to optimize the energy, material and emission balance of the load-bearing structure as well as façade throughout the entire life cycle of the building through adaptivity.

VENUE
The SWAA will be hosted at the campus of the University of Stuttgart, Keplerstrasse 17, 70174 Stuttgart, Germany. We are looking forward to welcoming you all in October!
Getting Here
The city campus of the University of Stuttgart is located in the centre of Stuttgart (Keplerstr. 17, 70174 Stuttgart) and can be reached by both public transport and by car.
The city campus of the University of Stuttgart is conveniently connected to Stuttgart main station (Hauptbahnhof). From here you can take:
- city-railway lines U29 or U14 to the stop “Börsenplatz”
- bus lines 40 or 42 to the bus stop "Katharinenhospital"

The airport is well connected via public transport (S-Bahn = suburban train) to Stuttgart main station (Hauptbahnhof). From there the city campus of the University of Stuttgart can be reached conveniently.
The S-Bahn station is located in the basement of the airport. Take a train (lines S2 or S3) to "Hauptbahnhof". From "Hauptbahnhof" you can take either the city-railway U29 or U14 to the stop “Börsenplatz” or the bus lines 40 or 42 to the bus stop “Katharinenhospital”.

Arrival by car is also possible, parking places are available nearby (usually subject to a fee).
Find a map with parking places here.
Please note: The Stuttgart urban area is a „low-emission zone”. Based on the exhaust emission standards (Euro standards) of diesel vehicles, there are four emission groups (classified by colored emission stickers). Only cars with a green emission sticker are authorized to drive and park in Stuttgart. All vehicles with diesel engines classified as Euro IV emissions standard and above are equally banned from entering the city limits.
